Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal discomfort or pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation, or both, without any detectable structural abnormalities or inflammation. Its exact cause is unknown, but factors such as abnormal gut motility, visceral hypersensitivity, gut-brain axis dysfunction, and alterations in gut microbiota may contribute. IBS diagnosis is typically based on symptom criteria, such as the Rome criteria, and ruling out other conditions. Management often involves dietary modifications, stress reduction techniques, medications to alleviate symptoms, and lifestyle adjustments tailored to individual needs.
